It’s a race. Will the Samsung Galaxy S Android 2.3 update hit first, or will the HTC Desire get its Gingerbread infusion beforehand? After finding out that the latter was set to get it as soon as this month, we’re now hearing that Samsung’s own veteran smartphone is due to receive it within “weeks”.
Android updates are hard to come by these days. That is if you don’t care to root your smartphone and install a vanilla kernel. For the Samsung Galaxy S fans in attendance, a new and improved version of your favorite smartphone, dubbed the Galaxy S Plus, is now rumored to debut this April in Russia. Oh yea, did we mention it ships with Android 2.3?
The roller coaster of gadget trends has resulted in a growing demand for large-screen smartphones. Back in 2001 the mobile industry focused on making phones smaller and more compact. Today small screens are out and big boy screens are in. Smartphones with 4-inch or larger screens now represent 24 percent of the market. Meanwhile smartphones with screen smaller than 3.4-inches dropped 30 percent over the past year. Wondering where the iPhone’s 3.5-inch display fits in?
It looks like there might be a longer wait than anticipated for the Samsung Galaxy S 2. Two online sites have switched release dates from March to May. Play.com and Expansys have both pushed the release date for the Samsung Galaxy S 2 back by eight weeks, and Play.com has also knocked £50 off the price tag.
Whether this is a real delay on production of the Samsung Galaxy S 2, or just that the two sites have been given more accurate release dates by Samsung than they previously had we don’t know, but those hoping for the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S 2 this month look like they’ll have to wait.
