Nokia and Microsoft are sending out invites for a joint party on August 17 in Cologne, the final day of the GamesCom Europe which descends on the city that week. Whenever the words, “Nokia” and “Microsoft” are seen together these days, talk about Windows Phone swiftly follows so the event has obviously sparked rumours.

Since the invite features a Windows Phone logo and promises “exciting actions and surprises [to] make it an evening to remember”, some are suggesting that the Nokia Sea Ray device, which has popped up in leaked videos, will get its first official outing at the event. We’re a little more sceptical. Holding a party during GamesCom suggests Nokia and Microsoft are hoping to woo more game developers to the platform and there’s also the little matter of Nokia World, which takes place on October 26 in London.

While we’d love to see the Nokia Windows Phone devices outed this month, we suspect we’ll be waiting until at least September, especially as the Nokia N9 is not due until then.

UPDATE: Invites to a UK Apple event have just hit our inboxes too, with exactly the same image as above. It looks like Apple will be simulcasting the iPad 2 announcement (if it in fact is an iPad 2 announcement). We’ll be there with bells on, so tune in at 6pm on 2 March, where we’ll (hopefully) be getting a look at the new iPad.

The iPad 2 is on its way, on the date that the rumour mill settled on. The invite is out of the bag, and Apple has invited folks along to an event next Wednesday, where it looks like it will be unveiling a new iPad. That’s not officially confirmed of course, but what else could that device be in the top right hand corner? Click through to take a closer look at the Apple invite, and see if you think that sneaky flash of a product shot is the iPad 2.

We’ll be reporting from the front line at Nokia’s Investor event this morning in London, where we’ve already heard that Steve and Steve will be teaming up to bring Windows Phone 7 to Nokia smartphones. Keep tuned in for more news from the event. We’ll be updating here as and when. Presentations kick off in half an hour.

UPDATE: We just bumped into Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in the corridor, so expect plenty of sweating and shouting from him when the ceremonies kick off in 10 minutes’ time.

Word is that the Facebook announcement that’s coming on Monday is the launch of a Facebook mail client, not just revamps to its inbox. Click through for the full invite…

Yet another Facebook event is due on Monday and the invite looks intriguing with images of the Facebook inbox icon plastered on it provocatively. We’ve got a creeping suspicion that Project Titan – the long-rumoured Facebook email service – might be about to break cover. Facebook messaging right now is quite irritating and definitely needs an overhaul. With Google and Facebook currently having a playground scrap, a Facebook Gmail fighter would also throw a big email shaped cat amongst the pigeons. Click the headline and hit the comments to let us know: would you use Facebook email?

Facebook has sent out an invite for a mobile event it’s holding this Wednesday, 3 November. The Facebook event is listed as a mobile event, which is fuelling speculation that we’ll be hearing about the Facebook phone that whipped up a bit of a hoo-ha not so long back.
