The BBC promised an international iPlayer service this year and today it has delivered. The first global iPlayer app is available in 11 European countries today and limited to the iPad. The move is part of a one-year pilot scheme that will expand to include the US, Canada and Australia later this year.

A global iPlayer app subscription costs either €6.99 (£6.14) a month or €49.99 (£44) for a full year, around a third of the cost of an annual UK licence fee. While the app shares the same look and feel as the domestic service, the way it works and the content it includes will be different.

Nintendo 3DS TV service launching in Japan, Europe to followThought your Nintendo 3DS was just for playing games and free headaches? Think again, Nintendo has confirmed its 3DS TV service will go live in Japan tomorrow via a new app from the Nintendo eShop.

The app is called “Itsu no Ma ni Terebi”, which is similar to the Japanese name for the SpotPass service. To commemorate the launch, Fuji Television and Nippon Television will be producing content specifically for the console. The shows will be free to download but will feature adverts.

LG handcuffs Sony PS3 imports in the UK and EuropeInspired by one of AFI’s 100 greatest movie quotes, LG has received its wish, “we don’t need no stinkin’ consoles”. The Korean firm has waged war against Sony and its Playstation 3, insisting bans be placed to prevent import. Today, Playstation 3 consoles imported into the UK and Europe will be seized by customs for at least 10 days.

Motorola Xoom headed to Europe

Motorola has revealed that its new flagship tablet, the Android Honeycomb powered Motorola Xoom, will be winging its way to our shores.

The Motorola Xoom will be available in Europe in Q2 2011. There’s no pricing or more specific dates for the device yet, but we’re just relieved to hear that we’ll be able to get our hands on one. Both the Wi-fi only, and the 3G/Wi-fi version will be available in Europe.

Google’s Nexus One is set for a tariff on Vodafone in Europe and though we knew after the launch that it would be coming to the UK first, a Vodafone spokesman has now said it’s release is imminent.
Engadget quotes an unnamed Vodafone spokesman (most likely at CES 2010) saying the handset will start shipping to the UK within “a few short weeks”.
The UK will be the first country in Europe to get the Google Nexus One. France, Germany and the rest of Europe will apparently have to wait until later in the year.
