In a bit of a weird interview with an Italian news source, Google chairman Eric Scmidt has not only revealed that the company plans to make its own Nexus tablet, but has heaped praise upon Apple and its late CEO Steve Jobs. Read more

Google has said in the past that Google Goggles could do face recognition but won’t because, well, it’s a bit icky. Eric Schmidt, Google Executive Chairman and frequent ponderer of the “creepy”, reiterated that point earlier this week saying the idea of Google creating a facial recognition database was “very concerning” and that Google just wouldn’t do it.

However, it seems that not everyone at Google agrees. A patent application focused on recognising faces on social networks popped up in February and, yesterday, an even more intriguing document was released by the US Patent and Trademark Office – a facial recognition patent focused on celebrities!

Here’s an impressive guest list: Steve Jobs, Google CEO (soon to be Executive Chairman) Eric Schmidt and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg are set to meet President Obama later today in San Francisco. While reports on Steve Jobs’ health abound, he remains scheduled to attend the high-powered summit.

The White House says the tech team are coming together to “discuss our shared goal of promoting American innovation, and discuss our commitment to new investments in research, development, education and clean energy.” So nothing too ambitious then! Obama praised Steve Jobs back in December when he used him in a speech as an example of the American dream.

Eric Schmidt is set to write a book, a book with a title that’s obviously not been put through Google Insights. The book will be called Empire of the Mind: The Dawn of the Techno-Political Age. (Google ‘Empire of the Mind’, and you’ll see Schmidt’s main competitor for the Google top spot is one Mr Jay-Z.)
