Merry Christmas, one and all! Just a short note from everyone on the Electricpig team wishing you a fantastic day, whether you have no plans to look at a screen today, or have already unwrapped a brand new Kindle or iPod and are on the hunt for apps and hacks and whatnot. We’ve got lots of coverage over the next few days designed to help you make the most of your new gadgets, from e-reader tips to app downloads and even Boxing Day bargain hunting advice. Stay tuned, and in the meantime, go eat some turkey!

Just a heads up to all our more vocal readers: we’re turning off Disqus, which we use for the comment system here on Electricpig, for the weekend at 5pm. Don’t worry: nobody’s been bad. We’re just doing some fiddling with the servers behind the scenes (maintenance and all that), and it’ll be back in operation on Monday at 9am. See you on the other side, and in the meantime, here’s some reading for the weekend for you:

Just a quick public service announcement: Electricpig searches are now a little bit easier. Tap a product or search term into the search bar on the top right, and you’ll now see images accompanying results, which should help you find what you’re looking for that much faster. Enjoy!

All change at ElectricPig

If you’re a regular on these pages, I hope you’ll have noticed some exciting changes lately. We’ve been quietly tweaking the stories we cover, refining reviews in response to your feedback and running more features.

All that good stuff will continue, but from today I will be concentrating on my new role as Republic Publishing’s Launch Editor, working on several exciting new projects. Having watched this site grow from an audience of hundreds to a veritable army of over 750,000 gadget fans, I wanted to say a huge thank you to all the readers and to everyone who has helped make EP such a success.

For those of you who would like to submit stories, products for review or tech tips, the ElectricPig team are dying to hear from you!

Tom Bailey – also ShortList’s Technology Editor – will be keeping the seat warm as Acting Editor.

Ben Sillis - formerly Reviews Editor – is moving upwards to become ElectricPig’s Deputy Editor. (He might even get someone else making him a cup of tea now).

Jem Djemal – ElectricPig’s new Commercial Director is itching to hear from brands wanting a slice of ElectricPig’s action.

Plus, you can reach the entire team through our Facebook or Twitter pages, and by getting stuck into the comments on any post. If you want to follow my adventures, hear about our new projects and stay in touch the best place is through Twitter @jamesholland.

We’ve been making a series of back end changes and upgrades to Electricpig in the last few weeks, and tonight there’ll be some scheduled maintenance going on behind the scenes, so you won’t see any new stories go up between Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. After this, we’ll be back online with a bang.

You’ll still be able to access the site while we’re working under the hood, there just won’t be any fresh content appearing on the site. It’s a good time to catch up on essential reading you might have missed, like the idiosyncrasies of Steve Jobs, the worst tech predictions ever, and the real reasons you can’t stop playing Angry Birds.

Thanks for your patience!

Around a month ago, TVonics asked us for help designing their next PVR. We threw it open to you, our readers, and asked you to decide what you wanted to see on the next TVonics PVR. You answered, and now TVonics has come out with a software upgrade for the TVonics DTR-HD500 in response. You spoke, TVonics listened, and are also chucking early access into the deal! Read on for more info.

Electricpig: Men at work!

If you’re wondering why there’s not the usual regular update of tech news and features on the site today, it’s because Electricpig has been sent in for a bit of a digital MOT, and will be in absentia until tomorrow. You can still look at the site, and catch up on anything you’ve missed recently (like our coverage of the new MacBook Pro, or our Angry Birds cake), but we won’t be able to post new content.

We’re updating the site so that it should run more smoothly for you, and we also need to carry out some essential maintenance while we’re at it. We’ll be back online by 7am tomorrow morning, when we’ll be posting as usual. Thanks for your patience!

In the meantime, why not have a go at the Angry Birds Competition: there’s only two days left to enter!

Today, Nokia is reborn. The once-great company is, after months of floundering with the Symbian millstone strapped firmly to its neck, throwing its lot in with Microsoft. It’s the smartest thing Finland’s finest could’ve done, and heralds a new dawn for the Big N. The chance for Nokia to be better, brighter and bigger than ever before.
