Dyson has taken another look at the vacuum cleaner and put it on a radical diet. The Dyson Digital Slim DC35 which goes on sale this week for £200 is a seriously svelte machine. It packs the same design as one of Dyson’s handheld cleaners (like the Dyson City DC26) with a motor that spins five times faster than a Formula 1 car’s engine but adds a slim but extra-long spout for getting in to tricky nooks and crannies. The battery will give you 15 minutes of cleaning pleasure but if you need to get some heavy duty dust busting done, there’s a turbo mode that offers six whole minutes of full on vaccuuming. The James Dyson Award winner has been crowned today, anointed with efficiently and accurately directed air by James Dyson himself. The winner for the 2010 James Dyson Award is a buoyancy bazooka called Longreach, a device that shoots an emergency buoyancy aid up to 150m out to sea. A red and white life ring this is not. It’s packed with flares and expands to forty times its original size when it hits the water.
The James Dyson Award winner will be announced on Tuesday, with James Dyson himself mulling over who he’s going to crown the winner as we speak.
