Asus plans ultraportable assault: five to six Ultrabooks launching in OctoberHow will Asus battle Apple’s MacBook Air? By launching up to six Intel Ultrabooks ranging in screen size from 11.6 to 13.3-inches. The news came straight from Asus chairman Jonney Shih who also confirmed pricing would start at $899 (£552). Depending on screen size and features, this price could sky rocket to $1999 (£1228). All thing considered, Asus might have what it takes to give Apple a run for its money.

Dell says goodbye to the Streak 5, but accessories live onOwners of the Dell Streak 5 are now part of a small and select group. The company has listed the Streak 5 as “no longer available” and wished the pint-sized slate a formal goodbye message on its website. Though the tablet has met its demise, Dell will be happily sell you accessories at a full price.

The Dell tablet portfolio now consists of the Dell Streak 7 and the Inspiron duo, commonly referred to as the “convertible tablet”. Discontinuing the Streak 5 was a long time in the making. Following several promotional bundles which deeply discounted the tablet with the purchase of a new Dell desktop or laptop, the stockpiles finally ran dry.

Intel ultrabooks begin mass production this SeptemberThe 2011 MacBook Air line will face stiff competition from Acer, Asustek, Dell and Lenovo very soon according to a report from DigiTimes. The industry insider has confirmed mass production of Intel-powered ultrabooks are scheduled for September. Leading the charge will be the Asus UX21 with its Core i7 processor and SanDisk SSD.

Since the Asus UX21 will be the first Intel ultrabook to come to market, it’s only fitting that we retouch its highlights. The UX21 features a second generation Intel i7 mobile processor, the same chip offered as an optional upgrade on the new MacBook Airs. It also features a 13-inch display, USB 3.0, weighs 2.4 lbs and is 17mm at its thickest point. Like the MacBook Air, it lacks an optical drive and uses a SSD for instant on and speedy boot times.

Dell UltraSharp U2412M now available: A budget-friendly IPS panel for the massesThe latest in Dell’s UltraSharp displays, the 24-inch U2412M, is now alive and kicking on the company’s website in the US and Japan. The U2412M joins the U2410 as Dell’s affordable 24-inch UltraSharp flagship and features the same 16:10 widescreen aspect ratio, IPS panel, and anti glare with hard coat 3H.

The dynamic contrast ratio has been bumped from 80,000:1 to 2,000,000:1, but the brightness is down from 400 cd/m2 to 300 cd/m2 and the response time is 8ms instead of 6ms. We’d say those are minor concessions considering the generous 33 percent price cut.

Apple beats Android to the punch, offers seven-day refund policy in Taiwan: Is the UK next?Android’s 15-minute refund window is hardly enough time to decide whether an app hits the mark. Though short, that’s still 15 more minutes than iOS users have with purchases from the App Store — until today. Apple has amended its terms and conditions for the Taiwan App Store, including a statement saying users can be reimbursed within seven days of receiving the purchased product once all copies are deleted.

The move comes on the heels of pressure by Taipei’s city government to meet the city’s consumer protection act. Google was also urged to change its Android Market return window, but failed to budge and settled with a fine. Why did Apple decide to play ball and will the UK be next to land a seven-day refund policy?

Apple doesn’t own the idea of using aluminium in gadget designs or creating a phone where the touchscreen is the focus of all your attentions but there’s a certain Cupertino touch that other manufacturers relentlessly attempt to mimic.

We’ve seen it this morning with the unveiling of the Dell XPS 15z which cops a lot of moves from the MacBook Pro – from its aluminium/magnesium alloy shell to the placement of its speakers, the arrows on its backlit keyboard and the positioning of its ports and slot-loading DVD drive. Is it asking to much to expect designers to do something a little different?
