The Daily Star has admitted what everyone else already knew: there is no Grand Theft Auto: Rothbury game and Rockstar games was never planning one. The paper published the false GTA Raoul Moat story on July 21 but has subsequently pulled the story from its website. In its apology, the paper admits that it didn’t check that its tale was accurate before phoning grieving relatives about the spoof game cover.

The Daily Star has been duped by a spoof cover for GTA game starring killer Raoul Moat. The admittedly tasteless image has been doing the rounds online for some time and has been pegged as windup by other papers but the Daily Star website is reporting the title as a genuine addition to the series. It says: “…last night gaming websites showed the cover of Grand Theft Auto Rothbury – a version of the Xbox hit Grand Theft Auto.” It even goes as far as contacting the families of Moat’s victims for a quote on the fictitious game.
