The Sony PS3 console is to get a serious price cut, with Sony announcing this “in the next couple of days”. The savings will come because Sony is introducing a version of the PS3 without its Blu-ray disc drive. At least, that’s what Mike Hickey, analyst at Janco Partners believes.

Xbox 360 is leading the PS3 in Europe, according to Microsoft – and it reckons it has the figures to prove it. The data comes from GfK Chart-Track, which estimates the Xbox 360 has sold approximately one million units more than PS3, and stands at odds with the claims Sony was making in May last year.

Sony boss man Kaz Hirai came out with some serious fightin’ talk when he told an interview that the Xbox 360 “lacks longevity” and that the PS3 would rule by the end of this console war. But was Microsoft going to stand by and let that slide? The hell it was. Xbox’s director of product management, Aaron Greenberg, has already struck back, calling Sony “complacent” and “out of touch”.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console has enjoyed another week outselling its rival, the Sony PS3, in Japan. For the week ending October 17, the 360 outsold the PS3 by 25 per cent (4,800 PS3s versus 6,000 Xbox 360s). But other figures released show that Microsoft has a long way to go before it challenges Sony’s overall sales figures in the region.
