The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series has made a rod for its own back. ‘Difficult second album’ syndrome for artists is far worse for game developers, and spiraling expectations will trip you up if you don’t have an incredibly clever plan set in place for future editions. Sequel parameters in modern gaming are limited only by the collective imaginations of those with their names in the credits, which on paper roughly translates to: ‘Make everything similar, but better and with bigger explosions than before.’
This is truer nowhere than in the Modern Warfare series, the third and most recent release in which, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, is set during and just after an international World War III. It’s a stunning game, but it begs one serious question: where the hell do you go from there?
It’s still more than six weeks to Christmas, but Modern Warfare 3, which goes on sale today, is looking so likely to outsell all comers that one bookie is already paying out. Paddy Power is already settling bets on Modern Warfare 3 as odds reached an absurdly definitely-happening 1/16, and is only offering 5/6 odds that it will go on to become the best selling video game of all time.
Modern Warfare 3 hits shelves next Tuesday, 8 November. But those who snag a copy before the release date could run the risk of having their Xbox Live accounts frozen if they play the game early. That’s the word direct from Microsoft, relating news it’s had from the game’s publisher, Activision. Read on for all the details.
Oops. Modern Warfare 3, the latest instalment in the massively successful Call of Duty shoot ‘em up franchise, has just slipped on to the Pirate Bay. A working dump of the Xbox 360 version is now doing a Spartacus on the Torrent site, and at the time of writing, eight file sharers had already downloaded the entire game, while 542 more were busy downloading it for themselves. And that’s just on one site, in two hours.
Modern Warfare 3 is not due for release until 9 November, but this region-free version has been confirmed as working, and is a huge blow for developer Infinity Ward band publisher Activision. The last Call of Duty game, Black Ops, went on to sell over 23 million copies worldwide, setting world records in the process. If you’re looking forward to playing the game legitimately, you might want to stay off YouTube for the next week or so: we’d expect spoilers imminently.
We’re just over three months away from getting out hands on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and while PS3, Xbox 360 and PC players have all been satiated with news, Wii owners have been waiting for word on their version. Now we’ve got it. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on the Wii is being handled by Treyarch.
The news was revealed by Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling on the One of Swords podcast. He bigged up the studio’s previous experience porting its own work on Call of Duty: Black Ops to the Wii as an example of its ability to translate warfare to the world of the Wiimote. No other details on the Call of Duty: Modern Wafare 3 Wii version have been revealed yet.
