WoW: Blizzard to end forum anonymityActivision Blizzard is to force users of its gaming forums to sign in with their real-world names in an attempt to prevent bad behaviour and hate speech.

Anonymous trolls are the curse of many an internet forum but now World of Warcraft and StarCraft players will need to stand by their comments thanks to Activision Blizzard’s Real ID system. Real ID simply requires users to sign in to discussion forums using their real names, the theory being that while Thrunknor the Death Knight might be willing to use somewhat fruity and offensive language to diss his foes, plain old Kevin Smithers might feel a little more restrained.

starcraftBlizzard, creators of World of Warcraft, Diablo and StarCraft, dropped a bit of a bombshell on the RTS community when it announced that there would be no LAN (Local Area Network) support for its upcoming sequel. Instead players will have to use Blizzard’s Battle.net online service, a move which the developer says was a “difficult decision” but a necessary “safeguard against piracy.”

WoW players rack up an incredible 16.6 million completed quests every single day, lead designer Jeff Kaplan has revealed. That means the 11 million story army of international World of Warcraft players is farming 11,520 quests each minute or 192 per second. Even after five years at the top of the MMO hit list, WoW is showing absolutely no signs of giving up its top spot.

The successor to the Microsoft Xbox 360 could feature a new “cool input device” (controller), if hints from Rob Pardo of World Of Warcraft creators Blizzard are to be believed. Pardo, speaking at a lunch at the Game Developers Conference, San Francisco, confirmed Blizzard had held talks with Microsoft on possible directions for the replacement to the Xbox 360.

A Swedish teenager collapsed after an extended World of Warcraft session. The 15-year-old boy had been celebrating the launch of the latest WoW expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, by inviting friends to his house for a 24-hour marathon bout of gaming. He suffered an epileptic fit caused by a combination of sleep deprivation, lack of food and prolonged concentration on the game, doctors said.
