While RIM has just outed three new BlackBerry 7 devices, including our favourite, the BlackBerry Bold 9900, we’re really waiting for QNX to make the leap from the BlackBerry PlayBook to smartphones. Rumours around about the first device to make the change have been around for months but now a new report has fleshed out details about the first QNX smartphone, codenamed the BlackBerry Colt.

The news doesn’t sound that positive with the suggestion that RIM is rushing to catch up with the rest of the smartphone market and having to make compromises as a result. Will the BlackBerry Colt really arrive with a single core processor and no support for BlackBerry Enterprise Server?

RIM cuts 10 percent of its workforce: Houston, we have a problemResearch in Motion will reportedly lay off 2,000 of its employees, or about 10 percent of its total workforce, according to a press release issued this morning. The move comes as part of a “workforce reduction” following the company’s rapid expansion which lead to quadruple growth in its team over the past five years.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything official from RIM about BlackBerry PlayBook Android apps support but it has obviously been beavering away on the feature. A beta build of the BlackBerry PlayBook Android app player was inadvertently revealed by the BlackBerry.com website and has now made its way onto the web.

Did you know Windows tablets outpaced BlackBerry PlayBook shipments this quarter?Here’s a shocker. According to a report by Strategy Analytics, Microsoft shipped more Windows-powered tablets in the second quarter than RIM did with its BlackBerry PlayBook. This resulted in Microsoft tablets commanding 4.6 percent of the market while RIM secured just 3.3 percent.

Samsung Galaxy Q is not the future of smartphones or tabletsPrepare yourself for a world of smartphone hybrids. Yahoo! Korea is reporting that Samsung is working on the Galaxy Q, a 5.3-inch ‘phone’ which blurs the line between smartphone and tablet. The thought of a five-inch smartphone is a far cry from 1999 when the Nokia 8200 reigned supreme as the smallest and lightest Nokia mobile phone on the market. You’d have thought RIM would be entirely focused on building the next generation of BlackBerry phones and persuading the world to embrace the BlackBerry PlayBook but it is also said to be working on a media hub to go head-to-head with the Apple TV.

The latest report comes from a well-connected BlackBerry fansite and follows word of the device, apparently codenamed BlackBerry Cyclone, from a site which previously outed details on the BlackBerry PlayBook long before it became official.
