BlackBerry Messenger has been in the news for all the wrong reasons recently but a new report suggests it could soon be used for sharing songs as well as riot updates. CNET and the Wall Street Journal both claim to have heard from multiple sources that RIM is in talks with the big four major labels to add a music sharing service on top of BlackBerry Messenger.

Rather than an all-you-can-eat Spotify-style streaming affair, the rumoured BlackBerry Messenger music service will apparently offer subscribers a stash of 50 songs at a time which they’ll be able to listen to on their phones and share with other BlackBerry users via BlackBerry Messenger. The BlackBerry Bold 9900 is in the frame as the first device to get access to the BlackBerry Messenger music features.

Adding new features to BlackBerry Messenger makes sense as its the platform’s biggest unique selling point but the idea of such a limited offering doesn’t sound thrilling. We assume the Kaiser Chiefs won’t get a look in either…

UPDATE: We’ve received a statement from RIM stating that “Jim Balsillie did not speak at any event in Toronto this week” so consider this rumour squashed for now.

Rumours that Blackberry Messenger is headed to iPhone have been around for a few months. Now a new rumour has put a date on its arrival in the iTunes App Store. Someone claiming to be an attendee at RIM’s social media conference says they were told by RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie that Blackberry Messenger will hit the iTunes App Store on April 26.

They claim the app will get an update with a new notification system later this year presumably after iOS 5 arrives. But would the RIM exec be spilling the beans like that?

BlackBerry’s BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), coveted by teenagers and it girls the world over, is headed out of the confines of the RIM OS, and into Android and possibly iOS handsets. We’re scratching our heads over this one: is this the equivalent of BlackBerry donating both its kidneys to Android, or is it a sensible move that will mean RIM is truly proliferate in the mobile space?
