The BBC is considering a Twitter ban to prevent actors, writers and crew from spoiling details of new shows. It follows a series of careless tweets that revealed secrets before the BBC press machine was ready to crank into action.

Sony PS3 jailbreak ban hacked

That Sony PS3 jailbreak ban that was announced with much publicity this week? It’s already been hacked by the army of modders out there. A hack that is now doing the rounds reportedly gives players the power to unban themselves and, if they know a console’s ID, can ban someone else’s console. It’s all getting a bit heated out there. Don’t expect Sony to take this hack lying down.

Sony threatens PS3 jailbreaker ban

Sony has said it will permanently block PS3 owners from the PlayStation Network if they’ve used a PS3 jailbreak on their console. Sony describes PlayStation Network as “a world of entertainment” in its notice and confirms that the PS3 jailbreak ban will have hacked consoles “terminated permanently”.

Is Arnold Schwarzenegger writing copy for Sony now? The blog post, actually by Jeff Rubenstein, Sony’s social-media manager, states that customers can duck the ban by ceasing to use and removing “all circumvention devices and deleting all unauthorised or pirated software from their PS3.” Sony hasn’t said when or how it’ll carry out the PS3 jailbreak ban.

A UK porn ban could be on the cards as the government prepares to meet ISPs in January to discuss a requirement for users to specifically request access to porn rather than just being able to plug rude terms into the search engine of their choice. The thinking behind the plans is based on the “think of the children” rational.

Conservative MP Claire Perry told the Sunday Times: “We are not coming at this from an anti-porn perspective. We just want to make sure our children aren’t stumbling across things we don’t want them to see.” Is this a slippery slope to censorship or simply good sense? Microsoft has officially responded to rumours that a journalist was told that using or mentioning Apple products at it’s events was “banned”.
The incident took place at an event held by Samsung and Microsoft Germany to promote Windows 6.5. A journalist was told off for saying his iPhone was the best phone he’d ever used.
Microsoft has now released an official statement making it clear that it’s fine with people talking about and mentioning Apple products at its events.
A Microsoft spokesperson told Ars Technica: “We’ve been unable to confirm the specific exchange, it would not reflect our overall company policy and business practices. Reporters and analysts are free to use whatever technology they wish…and always have been.”
It’s good that Microsoft has cleared the air but we do remember its big boss, Steve Ballmer, being a little less tolerant…
