We got pretty excited about Avatar Kinect when it was unveiled earlier this year, going so far as to compare it to the Star Trek Holodeck. Today it’s finally be release as part of the Kinect Fun Labs service which lets Xbox Live users mess around with Kinect experiments. Avatar Kinect uses the motion sensor to track not only your gestures but also your facial expressions.

The update including Avatar Kinect is available for free as a 658.59 MB download from Xbox.com. While Avatar Kinect will eventually require an Xbox Live Gold subscription, it’s unlocked for all Xbox Live member until September 8 with of 24 virtual environments to choose from and the option to share your virtual TV shows via sites including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Upcoming Xbox 360 firmware update incompatible with older hardware?At Microsoft’s MIX 11 convention this year, the software giant set in place plans to release a firmware update to the Xbox 360. Set to roll out as early as this week, the update adds Avatar Kinect, support for a new disc format and PayPal payments. Unfortunately, Microsoft has confirmed the update will be incompatible with a small number of Xbox 360 consoles.

I had thought that Kinect hacks would be the source of Microsoft Kinect‘s true science fiction credentials but it turns out those crazy folk at Redmond got there first. For all the tech journalist wittering (and I’m as guilty of it as anyone) about Minority Report, the technology Kinect is most likely to make real from the sci-fi canon is Star Trek’s Holodeck.
