The Motorola Defy achieved a real feat when we reviewed it by managing to be a rugged phone that was actually good. Clumsy Android fans should rejoice then that its successor, the Motorola Defy+ will make its UK debut this month. Beneath the rugged water-resistant and dust proof body and Gorilla glass 3.7in touchscreen, there’s a Android Gingerbread phone lurking with a 1GHz processor, 5MP camera, 2GB of onboard storage and a 2GB MicroSD card thrown in.

Of course there’s MotoBlur slapped on top of standard Android Gingerbread and the CardioTrainer fitness app and Zinio magazine reader come preloaded. You’ll also get some pretty stellar battery life: the Motorola Defy came with a 1540mAh battery which we got three days use from, the Motorola Defy+ steps that up with a 1700 mAH battery powering the show. Expect to see a network offering the Motorola Defy+ imminently but in the meantime check it out on video after the jump…

The LG Optimus 2X and LG Optimus 3D will soon be joined in Europe by a more affordable sibling – the LG Optimus Sol. LG has confirmed that the Android Gingerbread phone with its 3.8in Ultra AMOLED display will arrive next month.

Besides the screen which Samsung says will be easier to read in direct sunlight (hence the “Sol” name”), the LG Optimus Sol is powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, has 512MB RAM, a 5MP camera and comes in at 9.8mm thick. There’s just 150Mb of onboard storage but there’ll be a 2GB microSD card thrown in for good measure.

While those specs don’t exactly make the LG Optimus Sol stand out, it has an intriguing new feature. LG’s Dark UI is a new power management trick which uses less white light when the phone is idle. The firm says the change will extend battery life by between 20 and 30%. We’re intrigued to see how well it works and will grab an LG Optimus Sol as soon as we can.

Vodafone lists Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray as ‘coming soon’Not exactly a release date, but news nonetheless. Vodafone has just launched a sign up page for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray. The not-so-Neo Xperia Ray had us stumped in June, but we’ve found much to love in the bite-sized handset since. With a 3.3-inch FWVGA resolution touch screen and Gingerbread on-board, this could be one of Android’s finest value handsets to date.

As the most likely successor to the popular X8, the Xperia Ray packs an 8.1-megapixel camera, Reality Display and Mobile Bravia engine in a 9.4mm thin shell. While we’re still a bit flustered over the lack of a HDMI-out port, having the latest build of Android is a perk not many Sony Ericsson handsets can contend.
