Ready for the tablet curveball of the week? How about a Motorola Xoom WiFi-only tablet headed to first 4G carrier in the US. This is exactly the way the cards have been dealt by Sprint/Nextel, announcing via press release this afternoon they’d be adding Motorola’s first tablet to their portfolio sans 4G connectivity.

It’s time to put the speculation to rest, Motorola has come clean with sales data for its inaugural tablet, the Motorola Xoom. More than 250,000 Xooms have been shipped by the manufacturer during the first quarter of 2011, a respectable number, but shipments and actual device sales are quite different from a retail perspective. Combined with 9.3 million mobile device, 4.1-million representing smartphones, and it’s easy to see why Motorola’s net revenues were up 30 percent compared with the year-ago quarter.
The shelf life for gadgets evaporates at a blistering pace, particularly in the world of Android where new devices are announced in what seems like 24-hour intervals. Granted, it’s not exactly that fast paced, but for those covering the daily tech grind — at times it certainly feels this way. Today, HTC gave Android users a reason to celebrate. The upcoming HTC Flyer which ships with Gingerbread (2.4), will be updated “shortly after launch” to Android 3.0 Honeycomb.
Dell is departing from the 7-inch form factor and headed to bigger and better things. A 10-inch Dell tablet, dubbed the Dell Streak Pro, has just appeared in the company’s “Commercial Tablet Roadmap Summary”. Even more interesting is the company plans to launch a 10-inch Windows 7 powered Latitude ST and 13-inch Core i3 Latitude XT-3 workhorse.
