HOW TO: Add mobile broadband to your Samsung N310As you’d expect from a device like the Samsung N310 netbook, it comes with both a wired Ethernet connection, and 802.11g wireless. This means that whether you are at home, the office or out and about, you can connect to the internet. While many public places have Wi-Fi hotspots you can use, you may not always be able to find wireless coverage, especially if you move out of the big cities or are using your N310 on a train. So, if you want to stay connected,  mobile broadband is the solution for you.

Depending on the system that your mobile phone provider uses, mobile broadband speeds can be as fast as 14megabits per second, although to achieve this, you will need a very good signal. However, even at lower speeds, mobile broadband is comparable to your broadband connection at home, the only time you will see it slow down is in areas where the 3G coverage is poor, or you have low signal, in which case the connection may switch to the slower EDGE, or GPRS systems.

So, how do you go about connecting your Samsung N310 to mobile broadband? There are two main ways to do this and depending on how often you want to use mobile broadband, one may suit you better than the other. If you have a 3G mobile handset and mobile data is included in your monthly tariff, then you can use your phone to connect to your mobile broadband service.
The Samsung N310 has built-in Bluetooth, and this is one of the easiest ways to connect to your phone. However, the Bluetooth standard currently only operates at speeds up to 3megabits per second, so if you do connect your phone in this manner, you may not be taking advantage of the full speed of your connection.

If your phone was supplied with a USB cable, then this can be used instead, with no loss of speed. Whichever connection method you use, if your phone came with software, such as Nokia’s PC Suite (which can also be downloaded from Nokia’s website), then this will help you connect your phone to the N310 and then use the phone to connect to mobile broadband.

However, if you are going to be using Mobile broadband on a regular basis, then a USB Mobile Broadband modem (sometimes called a dongle), is a much better alternative. Each mobile provider offers different deals, but as an example, with 02 if you pay £9.79 a month, you will receive a free USB modem, be able to use up to 3GB of mobile broadband a month, and use any 02 Wireless hotspot for free. The modem comes with the software you need to get connected, as well as monitoring your usage, so you will always know how much data you have used that month.
