O2 set fanboy hearts racing this morning, with an announcement it would take pre-orders for the iPhone 3G from 8am. There was just one snag: their website went live late, and buckled under pressure from anxious customers, who then faced lengthy delays on the phone to O2’s customer service call centre.

If you’re waiting for the iPhone 3G to become available on pre-paid tariffs, you might have a few more months to kill. O2 says the next-gen handset won’t be available for Pay As You Go customers until much later this year.

The new phones will then be delivered to customers by courier on Friday.
