Listen up, designers! Today sees the opening of the 2012 James Dyson Award, which invites young designers to invent a solution to a problem. The winner receives £10,000 to develop their idea, plus an additional £10,000 for their university department.
Apple is now the world’s third largest mobile phone manufacturer, according to the research gurus at IDC, surging ahead of LG and ZTE to claim its spot behind Nokia and Samsung.
Apple is to hold a “strange” event in February and then launch the iPad 3 and iOS 5.1 in March, according to a Japanese report. What exact form the February event’s strangeness takes is something of a mystery, although it could be simply that it’s an industry-focussed launch similar to last month’s education-centric iBooks event in New York City.
Rock legend Neil Young has always been something of a maverick, and his latest comments surrounding the music industry are unlikely to win him many fans in the boardrooms of record labels. Young told the Dive Into Media conference this week that music piracy was “acceptable” and “the new radio… that’s how music gets around.”
We’ve been excitedly awaiting the launch of Samsung Galaxy S3, but sadly it appears that it’s a good few months off. Rather than unveiling the quad-core beast at Mobile World Congress at the end of February, as it did its predecessor last year, the Korean gadget giant has announced that “the successor to the Galaxy S2 smartphone will be unveiled at a separate Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year, closer to commercial availability of the product.”
Sir Howard Stringer, the Cardiff-born chief executive and president of Sony, is stepping down from his role after seven years at the head of the Japanese company. His replacement, Kazuo Hirai, will be a familiar name for most gadget fans, having been a central figure in Sony’s PlayStation business for many years.
