UPDATE: The metrics Fair Pay Insurance measures have been added to the article.

We’ve looked at TomTom’s new business models in the face of free competitors before, and today it’s announcing another new one. In conjunction with Motaquote, it’s launching a new type of car insurance, which includes a free satnav and uses a gizmo that logs how you drive, and assesses how much you’ll pay off the back of that.

chrome-android-2

We’ve been patiently waiting for Chrome for Android for several years now, and last night, Google finally answered our prayers. Those of us with an Android 4.0 phone at any rate: if you’re running “Ice Cream Sandwich”, it’s a fast, slick browser that lets you conveniently open pages from your dekstop, other phones, tablets and even Chromebooks, with slick card-based tabs. You can download it here.

But what if, like the 99 percent of Android users without Ice Cream Sandwich yet, you can’t install Chrome for Android? The stock 2.3 browser is still pretty poor, but never fear: here are five alternatives worth checking out with many of the same skills.

Last month, we wrote about the problem of Android app piracy, and the ready availability of paid-for apps through sites such as The Pirate Bay. Games and pricey navigation apps topped the chart of most stolen Android software, but the maker of one of the leading satnav apps on the platform, CoPilot Live, is doing just fine. Last June, Apple caused a shock when it launched Final Cut Pro X, a completely revamped version of its pro-video editing software. Enthusiasts and pros alike poured scorn on its new interface, disparagingly dubbing it “iMovie Pro.”

t-mobile-1

Starting on Wednesday, T-Mobile is launching a new unlimited data tariff, The Full Monty, complete with unlimited data, texts and calls. It’s akin to Three’s One Plan: T-Mobile representatives this morning were keen to stress that there is no hidden cap or limit to 3G use.

So how does it plan to offer this, without its network flagging under the pressure? With a new smartphone app that offloads your phone onto Wi-Fi hotspots seamlessly.

final-fantasy-13-2-6

Before I get to Final Fantasy 13-2, let me explain a few things.

There are three things I don’t understand in life. Economics is the most gaping chasm in my knowledge: if Greece is bankrupt, why doesn’t it just print more money?

The second is why Square-Enix keeps refusing to remake Final Fantasy 7, the best video game of the 1990s, but is happy to rehash Chrono Trigger, the second best game of the 1990s, on Nintendo DS and iPhone.

The third, by coincidence, also relates to the Japanese gaming giant. I can’t comprehend why it would amalgamate elements from both these iconic titles, then try and staple them on to the sequel of the worst single player entry in the Final Fantasy series so far.
