Google and Apple have a bit of a terse relationship. Throughout the years, the two companies have reluctantly worked side-by-side to bring Google search (and previously Google Maps) to the iPhone. Things are more frought than ever now, so it’s probably not a bad thing that Google has injected some Apple love into its Gmail app.
As spotted by Redditor Incepto, the screenshots in the App Store listing for the new, iPhone 5-compatible Gmail app have a little nod to Apple’s late founder Steve Jobs.

One of the screens shows a standard Gmail message as viewed from inside the app, but with a brown-nosing twist. Under the subject line ‘Your favourite Steve Jobs quotes’, reads the following message:
‘For our tribute to Steve Jobs, we’ve been collecting quotes. Here’s my favourite. What is yours?
“That’s been one of my mantras — focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.”’
So that’s nice. Is this just Google’s way of buttering Apple up before it submits its new Google Maps app? Or is it a fairly genuine mark of respect? Probably a bit of both, if you ask us.
