Now that we’ve all made the jump from SD to HD, TV manufacturers are desparate to find ways to make us all upgrade again. 3D is one such tactic, but so is the Smart TV craze. Thing is, why bother when devices like the new Favi SmartStick lets you turn any HD TV into a fully-functioned Smart TV for under £60?

The SmartStick is a real gem of a device. It slits into your on of your TV’s HD slots, and brings you a computing experience powered by Android Jelly Bean. The stick itself costs $50 (£30), while the optional (but probably essential) wireless keyboard/trackpad remote is $40 (£24).

Does anyone want Smart TV?

That cost gifts your TV access to a full web browser, alongside an army of apps from the Google Play Store. That includes some that have been tailored to suit a large HD display, like Netflix.

All in all, it’s a top option for anyone who wants to eke more from their existing set without paying a heinous amount for a new Smart TV.

there are loads of devices like this – more powerful ones like the UG802 / MK808 are a better option.

    • Rob

I’m looking in to getting one of these. Have you used one?

  • Rob

So what sort of specs are we looking at and where does it get it’s power from? Does it take it from the HDMI port?

    • James

this one I think is a single core A9 clocked at 1ghz. Most of these devices come with an external USB power adapter (5v 2a) as the HDMI port and USB port on the TV (if available) are not quite enough to run it well. The less powerful ones don’t necessarily require it. most of the new ones are based on the Rockchip 3066 dual-core Cortex A9 clocked at either 1.2 or 1.6ghz SoC (which has a quad core mali-400 gpu) which get pretty decent performance.
Google MK808 and you’ll get videos, reviews etc etc. Cost about £45 inc delivery from china, but be prepared to wait 2-3 weeks for delivery.

Yes, have used a number of different devices now. I haven’t tried one of those small remotes/controllers with them yet, but use a PS3 controller (running custom firmware) and cheap wireless keyboard+mouse with them (I use a powered USB hub, which I have a WD MyBook 1tb USB drive, belkin bluetooth dongle and the keyboard/mouse dongle connected to).
