We’re not about bandwagon jumping. We’ve all seen the complaints about Apple’s new Maps application, but, you know what? It’s not as terrible as all that. Still, people don’t really like change. Good news, then: if you long to have Google Maps back on iOS, you might not have to wait for the official release.

Developer Ryan Petrich has released the below video of his hack that brings Google’s mapping solution back to iOS for iOS 6. In his words, the app is “still crashy and cannot be distributed to the public yet, but it mostly works.”

There’s no word on when Petrich plans to make this hack available for everyone, but there’s certainly demand for it: Apple Maps has gone down like a led balloon. Google has reportedly submitted an official Google Maps application to Apple, which is currently awaiting approval.

Looks like the iOS mapping war is only just getting started.

In some areas the mapping is fine and the major city 3d buildings are very impressive. I have found areas in Northern Finland that were much better resolution than Google. However the errors and some clouded out or low resolution maps in UK are poor. A particular loss on the iPad is the street view which made finding places so easy when I’m travelling on business.
