If you’ve not got enough room for a tower computer and can’t afford an all-in one, what’s the next best solution? PC on stick of course! Specifically, an Android-powered one for the cost of a night out.

Moore’s Law is busy making sure that tech shrinking and growing more powerful at such a rate that we’ll soon be able to lose super computers down the back of the sofa. In the meantime, it also means that you can now turn a monitor into a PC by way of tiny USB sticks.

The Rockchip 3066 by Oval Elephant is such a stick, and it’s fairly generously specced. For $80 (£56), you get a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of inbuilt flash storage. There’s also a USB port, HDMI output and MicroSD card slot.

Linux on a stick saves your parents’ PC

The icing on the cake is that it’s running a version of Android Ice Cream Sandwich that proffers full access to the Google Play Store, as well as HDMI playback.

With Android services like Netflix and Google Movies, that makes the stick a viable alternative to WiFi boxes like the Roku player and Apple TV for any TV with a USB input. Nice one.

Just want to clarify that it’s not a USB stick as that’s actually an HDMI male connector on the end there. These plug straight into a HDMI port with a USB female port on the back being used for external storage. There’s plenty of these (and variations of) on Chinese mart sites, been around for a while.
