Keeping ‘mum’ on future products is a tricky business. These days it seems that for every one tight-lipped employee there are two slips of the tongue and one inside leak. Thing is, there’s legitimate slip-ups, then there’s misconstrued, arm-flailing gossip mongering. Microsoft’s just been the subject of the latter, and now it’s on damage control mission regarding the next Xbox.

Talking to The Verge, Microsoft’s General Manager for Windows, Brian Hall, seemed to unveil the impending launch of a brand new console (1:40 in the video below):

Hang on… The next Xbox?! Cue the majority of the gaming press going absolutely bananas and declaring that we’re standing at the very eve of a new console launch. Not so…

“When Brian mentioned a ‘new wave of products,’ he was referring to the full lineup of products coming later this year from Microsoft,” reads a carefully-worded Microsoft response, “including Windows 8, Office, Windows Phone and of course our fall Xbox update which will bring a host of new consumer experiences like Xbox Music, Videos, Games on Windows 8 and Xbox SmartGlass.”
