The Xperia S, which is the current flagship handset in Sony’s NXT range, is a mighty fine mobile with a lot of loyal support. It launched in March this year, but it seems like those four months have been long enough to warrant an update. This could very well be it – the Sony Xperia SL – but is there already a problem?

The leaked images come from Chinese site ePrice, which claims to have stumbled across official press shots of the as-yet unannounced Xperia SL along with a tiny smattering of specs.

Chief among those is the processor, which will benefit from an upgrade to a dual-core, 1.7GHz Snapdragon S3 chipset. Other than that and the fact that it’ll come running Android 4.0, we’re in the dark.

When will your phone get Jelly Bean?

But that in itself is a bit of a surprise. Sony’s making inroads to try and get Ice Cream Sandwich on the majority of its current handsets, but when pushed on Jelly Bean updates, the company told us: “we are evaluating potential upgrades for our current smartphone portfolio and will get back with more information in due time.”

Bit vague. The Sony Xperia S launched with Android 2.3 and has since been upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich. Will the Xperia SL follow a similar route – launching with Android 4.0 and then later making the jump to Jelly Bean?

That’d be the best case scenario, by the looks of things, but it still suggests that – despite Google’s best efforts with the Android PDK – the majority of manufacturers are still working to yesterday’s deadlines. Only time will tell as to how this affects the rumoured Xperia SL.
