Xbox 360 gamers who prefer to rock an Android mobile can finally mess around with their avatars on the bus with the launch of My Xbox LIVE for Android. Sadly, the app won’t actually talk to your console.

Much like its iOS equivalent, My Xbox LIVE on Android gives you a portable, finger-friendly interface to your LIVE profile. You can keep tabs on your Gamerscore and achievements, as well as those of your friends. You can also exchange direct messages with your LIVE mates.

The future of Xbox Live is on iPhone and it is evil

More importantly, you can use Microsoft’s cute mobile editor to change the look of your avatar, fiddling with colours and swapping out virtual clothes until your Mini-Me looks sharp as a tack.

Sadly, just like its iOS cousin the app is only designed to speak to Xbox LIVE, rather than your actual Xbox. This is in marked contrast to the Xbox Live companion app for Windows Phone which acts like a remote control for your console and really works well if you use your 360 as a media centre. We shouldn’t be too surprised that Microsoft would want to stuff the really cool features into an app for its homegrown mobile OS, but it does seem a shame that – to put it bluntly –  so few Xbox owners will ever get to use it. Oh well: at least Microsoft’s SmartGlass tech is on the way for all three major platforms.

My Xbox LIVE is a free download, available on the Play store.
