It’s not often we get to write a sentence with “Windows Phone” and “gaming landmark” in it, but here goes: Windows Phone owners will get a chance to play a gaming landmark, as Square Enix has released classic RPG Final Fantasy for the Microsoft mobile platform.
The first Final Fantasy game appeared 25 year ago this December and now – at last! – it has arrived on Windows Phone. We joke of course – the game only hit iOS last year and still hasn’t appeared on Android, which is a shame because gameplay-wise it’s as solid as ever, offering a simple but engrossing RPG quest that sets up many of the iconic themes that have made the Final Fantasy series what it is today.
The best Windows Phone apps of all time: Top 100
Modern Final Fantasy games are CGI-fests, full of noble looking heroes with ridiculously large swords who stand in front of wind machines looking all sad. Classic Final Fantasy is much more old-school RPG and we think it’s all the better for it. While we’re about it, we’ve noted the absence on iOS, Android and WinMo of THE BEST Final Fantasy instalment – Final Fantasy VII. Seriously, Square Enix, sort it out. We have money waiting for you, why won’t you take it?
Graphically, the game has been given a makeover. It’s not exactly Final Fantasy HD, but the graphics have been tarted up and the sound reworked to give something that at least looks as though it was made for mobile rather than a NES. At £5.49 it’s probably the most expensive game you will buy for your Windows blower, but if you like RPGs or are just nostalgic for a lost youth spent huddled over the NES then we don’t think you’ll regret it.
