When Apple unveiled Siri, buried inside the iPhone 4S at the tail end of last year, it did so in a pretty unusual way. How so? Siri has a ‘beta’ tag attached to it, symbolising that it’s not quite the finished, polished product we’ve come to expect from Apple. Now a new source has come out of the woodwork declaring that the voice assistant is an “embarrassment” to Apple. Would Steve Jobs have let it be this way?

Fortune Tech’s Adam Lashinsky, who last year published the book ‘Inside Apple’, which chronicles life inside the world’s most secretive company, has just written a lengthy review of Apple CEO Tim Cook’s first couple of quarters in office.

The piece is an insightful look at the ethics and ideals man who not many people know all that much about, but nestled inside the article is one incredibly interesting tidbit: according to one of Lashinsky’s many ex-Apple employee sources, Siri is regarded internally as a disaster.

“People are embarrassed by Siri,” according to the source, which Lashinsky uses to back up his point that “Siri’s response time has been slow, meaning the servers and software powering it are inadequate.”

The ex-insider says that, had he survived to see its launch and roll-out, Steve Jobs “would have lost his mind over Siri.” Jobs had a notorious attention to detail and perfectionist streak, and we already know that the man was unhappy at not being able rename Siri – the name of the tech that Apple bought out – to something more iFriendly.

Would Jobs be furious over the ‘beta’ tag attached to the iPhone 4S’ sometimes flaky voice assistant? Let us know your thoughts below.

Siri is Apple’s only medium term savior, disregard iOS and other ‘i’s. Apple needs to pour enough resources into Siri. Other ‘i’s will be gone but Siri will remain. Who cares if it is regraded internally as a ‘joke’, sometimes only ‘joke’s will come to save you.

iPhone, iPad, iOS, Mac = Short Term (5 to 7 years)

Siri = Medium Term (10 to 12 years)

Nothing (Main reason for Apple Labs) = Long Term (20 to 25 years or even more)
