Sonos takes its sweet time with new hardware, and after a year, it’s ready to show its latest creation: the Sonos Sub. It’s a wireless subwoofer for your Sonos sound system, and yet another differentiator against Apple’s seamless AirPlay system: read on for the video.
The Sonos Sub’s not just another ZonePlayer for your multi-room audio: it’s a two-speaker subwoofer with a weird resemblance to the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Measuring 40.1×15.7×38.1cm, the Sonos Sub doesn’t need to be hooked up to any ZonePlayers, just a power source: it then jumps on the same wireless network with a push of a button to start with the bass shaking.
The only catch is it won’t work with the older, non-amplified models -the Sonos Connect, ZP90 and ZP80. Every other ZonePlayer, as well as the Sonos:3 and Sonos:5 models with built in speakers are good to go though.
You can check it out in the video below: it’s a bit of a beast, weighing in at 16.4kg – you’ll want to take the car when you go to pick this one up. Speaking of which, it’s on sale in June in glossy black for £599. If you can hang tight, a matte version is set to go on sale in October for £499.
