The CD, and physical media as a whole, is a dying idea, right? Not if Samsung has anything to say about it. While rumour abounds that Microsoft is going to abandon discs for its next Xbox, Sammie’s trying to make sure they live on, even going so far as to bring playback to your Android tablet with this: the world’s thinnest optical drive.

Got an Android tablet with a full-size USB port? Does it run on Android 3.1 or above? Then you might be very interested in this: the Samsung SE-218BB. It’s an external DVD drive with a waif-like profile. At 14mm, it’s so thin that Samsung’s claiming it’s smaller than any other – even the Apple’s MacBook Air SuperDrive.

The drive is aimed squarely at tablet and Ultrabook users who want portability but still occasionally need to use CDs and DVDs. While more complicated processes like ripping probably won’t go too smoothly on a tablet, the fact remains that you can use the SE-218BB to watch your DVD library on select Android tab.

MacBook Pre refresh: Apple ditching discs?

Obviously, on top of Android, the drive supports Mac OS X and Windows 7. After the tech specs? Fill your boots: it offers “24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-RW, 8X DVD±R recording, 5X DVD-RAM recording, 6X DVD+R Dual Layer recording, 6X DVD-R Dual Layer recording, 8X DVD+RW recording and 6X DVD-RW recording.”

The US price for the Samsung SE-218BB is $59.99, which comes in at around £37. Do you want to keep the disc dream alive? Let us know if you plan on buying Sammie’s drive below.

Im waiting for the BetaMax version! Seriously though, I cant see any
use at all for this. Surely most people would just rip the DVD to their
tablet or stream it over the internet? With Netflix/Love film become cheaper and having a larger range I cant help but think its the pointless invention of the years.

Far from pointless. So, Microsoft is going to ditch discs for its next XBox? Good thing I dont play games any more. I do not have any other internet connection other than my cell phone. And with the price of data plans on cell phones I will not be able to do much with anything that needs to be downloaded. Thank you to samsung i will now be able to do lots of cool things with my Android tablet that I was not capable of before. This will ussher in the ability to read ISO immages of CDs on my tablet. Something that I have wanted to be able to do for a while now. Just couldnt die to Android not having a refferance point to optical discs. Well now it will. Mr William Jones, you are a snot and should piss off. LOL!!
