Remember HTC’s run of Facebook-focussed smartphones? They didn’t exactly set the market alight, but found a home with a fair few fans nonetheless. Now there’s word of a ‘Facebook Phone’ round two, but will HTC want to leverage the social network’s biggest new asset?
According to Digitimes and sources close to the project, HTC is working on knocking together a new series of phones that run on “a platform exclusive to Facebook,” for launch in the third quarter of this year.
The report makes out that this will be something a bit more special than the integration found on the HTC Salsa and ChaCha. That’s not going to take much doing, but it’s got us intrigued, nonetheless. Facebook’s mobile app is its biggest downfall, and while Mark Zuckerberg has always been keen to gift universal Facebook access on every platform, there’s certainly scope for improving the mobile experience with a bespoke OS.
Where things get really interesting, though, is when you think about the cool billion dollars that Facebook just paid for Instagram. While that too aims to integrate with Twitter and other networks just as much as Facebook, it makes sense to suggest that HTC will want to (and be able to) include the service within the OS.
A fully integrated Facebook phone with Instagram as the primary camera app? Sounds intriguing. And sounds likely, given HTC’s insistence that it’s getting out of the aimless race to the top of the megapixel charts. Is this sounding like your dream handset?
