It’s a day of budget handsets, today, which points to a Mobile World Congress of more of the same. Moments after ZTE has unveiled its Mimosa X handset, Samsung has just rolled out refreshed Galaxy Ace and Galaxy Mini handsets. Hang on, though: today’s budget phones are starting to outrank yesterday’s flagships…

The Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 (pictured left) is the higher specced of the two handsets. Its Android 2.3-packing frame boasts a 3.8-inch screen, an 800MHz dual-core processor, a 5-Megapixel rear-facing camera and a 640×480-pixel front-facing one for web chats.

In other words, it’s of the same sort of ilk as the once-king of Android: the HTC Desire, except with dual-core technology thumping away in the engine room.

The Galaxy Mini 2, meanwhile, shrinks that screen size down to a more pocket-friendly 3.27-inches but ups the resolution over the original Mini. The camera isn’t all that special at 3-megapixels, but it does run on the fairly recent Android 2.3. Both smartphones have 4GB of built in storage built in.

There’s no word on pricing, but you can expect both handsets to sit in the bottom tier of the smartphone market. These days that’s nothing to be sniffed at, though: Android’s starting to shake off its embarrassing low-end.

As mentioned, the Galaxy Ace 2 has specs to rival the flagships of 2010 and in some cases 2011. Not bad for something that’ll only set you back about £100. Both handsets will be out in April. Interested? Let us know below.
