Let’s not mince words: if you follow certain online social circles you’ll know that EA’s Origin online distribution gaming store doesn’t have many fans. Or not compared to Steam anyway. This could be about to change, though, with a deal for a free copy of Battlefield 3 leading a new charge in customer satisfaction.

Before we go any further, we should make it clear that the deal seems to be US-only. We’ve contacted EA to see if it’s coming to the uK, but it’s not up on the UK Origin site. Sorry. It basically allows any customers who digitally pre-order Mass Effect 3 to receive a gratis copy of Battlefield 3. Sounds good to us.

The thing is, it’s kind of uncharacteristic of EA. The Origin service has been berated for its lack of deals and its poor customer service by anecdotal evidence online. The general feeling is that it’s not very loved. If EA start bashing out more deals like this, though, it could help it repair its online image.

Steam teaches Sony, Microsoft and EA how it’s done

Over Christmas we wrote about how Steam, EA Origin’s biggest competitor, continues to win fans thanks to an immense amount of offers, competitions and deals.

EA Origin sorely needs to adopt a similar approach if it wants to turn its image around, and giving away top-tier games like this is a tremendous start. Check out the Mass Effect 3 trailer below:
