You know what it’s like: you’re trapped in a war zone and really need to update Twitter to tell the world what you had for lunch. Luckily, the micro-blogging site has just signed up with two satellite networks to allow tweeting from the most desolate areas on the planet.

The deal between allows mobile subscribers access to Iridium and Thuraya satellite linkups. “Now, even if phone lines and the Internet are inaccessible — for example, in a war zone or after a natural disaster — people will be able to share news and stay informed via Twitter,” says the official Twitter blog.

27 signs you’re a d*ck on Twitter

It works just like Twitter by SMS; you’ll have to plumb in a short code for each satellite, which should then let you fire off a tweet even when you’ve got no mobile signal.

It essentially turns your mobile into a satellite phone – albeit one only capable of tweeting. Still, nice to know you can get #HelpMeImBeingHeldHostage trending from inside a shed in the arse end of nowhere.
