The tech world is still alive with rumours about the upcoming Apple HD TV sets, but are we all getting ahead of ourselves? Stock shortages and product codes appear to point to a refreshed Apple TV set-top box landing sooner…
9to5Mac is reporting that it’s found the codename for an updated Apple TV box. Apparently rooting around in the iOS 5.1 beta reveals the product codename ‘J33’ referring to ‘Apple TV 3.1’. All that we know about the specs is that it’ll use Bluetooth 4.0.
But we also know that it’s coming pretty soon. According to a spy inside Best Buy in the US, the current Apple TV is out of stock, and won’t be coming back in stock any time soon. , thanks to the imminent arrival of this updated device. The source says:
“A customer was inquiring tonight about Apple TV. However right now we are out of stock (Which hasn’t happened since I started). Not only were we out of stock, but also I was also unable to order one from our product ordering system (OMS). Product was listed as ‘currently unavailable’.
“From prior experience, this usually is associated with a product that is being ‘discontinued’.”
Could the refrshed box be included in Apple’s early March iPad 3 launch? Apple is starting to take TV seriously. Last week the company streamed a Paul McCartney gig live from Hollywood to its boxes and rumour has it it’s looking into sports content.
Are we standing at the forefront of an Apple TV onslaught? Seems likely.
