Nikon today unveiled a mountain of new Coolpix compact cameras, with the Nikon P510 sitting right at the peak. Despite being smaller than most bridge cameras, the 16-megapixel P510 sports an astonishing 42x optical zoom lens – that means a focal length range of 24mm to 1000mm.

Talk about versatile: this can take a wide angle landscape shot one moment and a close-up of a squirrel’s face as it hangs off a tree two miles away the next (that may be a slight exaggeration). It also features a tilting 3-inch 921,000-dot LCD screen, GPS, full HD 1080p video recording and a special 120fps movie mode for smooth super slo-mo playback. It goes on sale 22nd March for around £400.

Also revealed today is another 16-megapixel superzoom, the Nikon L810. This features a 26x zoom lens that starts at just 22.5mm and goes all the way to 585mm (on sale 22nd March, £230).

There’s also the enthusiast-centric Nikon P310, a pocket-sized snapper with a large F1.8 aperture 4.2x lens, full manual controls, 120fps video and 1080p recording (out 22nd March, £300). The Nikon L310, meanwhile, offers a 21x optical zoom in a similarly small body (out 15th March, £200).

And there’s more. The Nikon S30 is a 10-megapixel compact designed to be used by all the family: it’s waterproof and shockproof, and features simple menus and large buttons (on sale 29th March, £100). There are other simple, small and affordable cameras too: the £70 Nikon L25 and £100 L26, both on sale 16th February.

Finally, we have the new Nikon S9300 (£300, out 15th March) and Nikon S6300 (£180, out 16th February), a couple of slimline, style-centric compacts designed for travel and versatility. The S9300 has an 18x zoom lens and GPS, while the S6300 has a 10x zoom.
