It might not come as a surprise, but it’s good to hear Ubisoft confirming on record that Assasin’s Creed 5 will be coming out in 2012. Better yet, the games publisher’s CEO is now talking up “new platforms” too.
Speaking to trade publication MCV, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed the next Assassin’s Creed installment, whether it is called Assassin’s Creed 5 or 3, will be out this year, and defended the company’s decision to deliver such frequent iterations. He also hinted at the continued expansion of Assassin’s Creed to other games platforms beyond PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 .

“Assassin’s Creed is an incredible franchise and there are a lot of expectations that it will continue to grow,” he said. “We think that delivering regular instalments and expanding the brand to other platforms will continue to satisfy the demand, while at the same time attracting new fans.”
Assassin’s Creed games are already available on iOS, Android and Windows Phone, and the company has revealed a PlayStation Vita version is in the works. Guillemots comments hint at potentially more fully-featured mobile versions of the game, now that the console versions can be played on tablets and mobiles via OnLive.
Where the next Assassin’s Creed may go is still under wraps, although Ubisoft has confirmed that Ezio, star of the last three console installments, will not return.
Last November, Assassin’s Creed Revelations writer Darby McDevitt told Electricpig that he would like to see the game go to revolutionary Ireland next. Kotaku meanwhile puts forward a compelling argument on why future versions may focus on China and New York.
