Some bold new claims are floating around concerning the Xbox 720’s power capabilities. The word is that the next-generation will be six times as powerful as the Xbox 360 thanks to a monster Radeon HD 6670-style processor, leaving the Wii U in the dust.

The console market is a tricky one to enter. Make a new machine and you can bet it’ll be swiftly outclassed. That’s what Nintendo might be sweating, if rumours that this next Xbox will land around Christmas 2013 are to be believed.

According to IGN, the processor inside the Xbox 720 will offer 3D in 1080p and graphical prowess around a fifth more powerful than what the Nintendo Wii U can offer on paper.

Whether there’s any truth at all to these rumours, we can be sure that Microsoft is working on the next Xbox behind closed doors. The current word suggests that the console will get an airing at this year’s E3, before hitting shelves late next year.

If all that’s true, you can expect the new Microsoft console to proffer some serious power. As to whether that power truly is 6 times better than the current generation? Time will tell.

Have Nintendo ever really cared about who had the “Most P0werful L33t consolz” ?

Nope, but I wouldn’t say that’s their problem at the moment. They need a compelling reason for third party developers to create amazing games on their platform, rather than cheap shovelware.

Well the N64′s slogan was ‘The fastest, most powerful games console on earth’ so yes. The NES was hardly behind the times in the 80s either and the SNES was a very capable machine too. Come to think of it, the GameCube was much more powerful than the PS2 as well (I expect they didn’t see the Xbox as enough of a threat to bother out-powering it).
