Yesterday Apple unveiled its new iBooks 2 platform with an educational slant and the iBooks Author app to help publishers create stunning new digital textbooks. Now those textbook tools have been dissected, and some of the file info points to an iPad 3 with double the resolution of the current model.

Some of the images found in iBooks Author have “@2x” in their file name, which pertains to their resolution having doubled from the images currently found on the iPad 2. The iPad 2 has a display resolution of 1024×768.

If the files used in future textbooks are twice that, then surely the iPad 3 will have a screen resolution of 2048 by 1536?

iBooks 2 unveiled: Apple takes on Education

That comes out as a DPI count of 260 – not quite the 300 DPI needed to be called a true ‘Retina Display’, but it’s still a marked improvement on the current tablet’s screen. Many of the rumours floating about concerning the iPad 3 point to an improved display, so this all makes a lot of sense.
