Ever wondered what it’s like to work at Apple on a day to day basis? We’ve walked you through every necessary step in terms of how to get a job at Apple, but what then? Luckily, a new book has filled in some surprising details of what happens once you’re in the door.

‘Inside Apple’ by Adam Lashinsky is an extensive look into the inner workings of the most secretive tech company in the world, and an effort to “decode its secret systems.” An extract published ahead of the book’s launch has revealed what your first day at Apple HQ is like. In short: it sounds terrifying.

How to get a job at Apple

Apple expects you to hit the ground running. “The realisation that there’s no one to help you connect your newly issued computer,” is what one ex employee found the strangest. “The assumption is that those smart enough and tech-savvy enough to be hired at Apple can hook themselves up to the network.”

But is that Apple just not taking care of its staff? No; it’s far deeper than that. You have to get yourself connected to the servers, which involves taking the initiative to go and talk to people. “It’s a clever way to get people to connect with each other,” says Lashinsky.

It’s not an entirely lonesome beginning, though. Apple “provides the name of a peer outside the primary team who can serve as a sounding board, someone for the bewildered new employee to ask questions of.” This peer, we kid you not, is called your iBuddy. Reminds us of this.

Inside Apple is out on January 25th.
