Minecraft for the PC costs £16.95 now that it’s finally out of beta, but to some people that’s just money that can’t be spared. Luckily, the game’s developer ‘Notch’ has a message for his fans: if you can’t afford it, just pirate it.
The fan-friendly message was delivered straight from the horse’s mouth to a willing Minecraft customer who couldn’t spare the cash. Apparently Notch simply told the fan: “Just pirate it. If you still like it when you can afford it in the future, buy it then.”
It’s a great message to gamers, and a stance that developers should all take. Pirating for many is only an option because they can’t afford to buy whatever it is they’re buying, not because they’re evil. Just look at the experiment Radiohead did with their in rainbows album: sure, lots of people paid nothing, but a fair whack of people offered cash.
Although Notch did add “don’t forget to feel bad,” to the would-be thief, the fact that he trusts the world enough to not really care about the threat of piracy is pretty refreshing. If you want Minecraft but haven’t the cash to buy it legally, you can pirate yourself a free copy here.
Just remember to give Notch the cash when you get paid, won’t you?
