Bang & Olufsen has outed the Beolit 12 – a compact speaker system branded under the newly formed B&O PLAY set of products. It’s got Apple’s AirPlay on the spec sheet, but it doesn’t come cheap.

B&O PLAY is a new line of products “focussed on a more playful and portable product portfolio.” We’re not sure what that means in practice, but this portable speaker is the first out of the blocks, so you can guess we’re going to be looking at a range of new B&O speakers over the next year.

Sonos update gives AirPlay a run for its money

The Beolit 12 has been designed to resemble old transistor radios, but sports some altogether more advanced tech inside. The amp is a meaty 120 Watts digital Class D number, while AirPlay connectivity means you’ll be able to hook it up to iPhones, iPads and newer iPod Touches wirelessly.

There’s a built in rechargeable battery and a power cord that tucks in underneath when you’re out and about. And the cost? Well it’s a B&O product, so you can’t expect these to walk away with a full wallet. The Beolit 12 can be yours for the princely sum of $799 (£516) when it launches in February.
