Several new HTC quad-core phones are set to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress next month – that’s if word from JPMorgan Chase analyst Alvin Kwok is to be believed. But the big news is that none of the ‘several’ handsets that’ll come out of the expo will boast Qualcomm processors.

It’ll be the first time that HTC has shied away from using processors from Qualcomm – the two companies have worked closely together throughout HTC’s mobile career – but it seems as though when it comes quad-core, there’s a better option.

HTC is expected to use the popular NVidia Tegra 3 chipsets. So shun Qualcomm? Simple: Qualcomm’s quad-core chips are built around LTE connectivity, which would render them useless in most of Europe.

Why we’re not ready for quad-core phones

HTC needs European sales. The company had a bad run of slowing sales towards the latter end of 2011, but Kwok claims that’s nothing a few flagship quad-core smartphones can’t turn around. He’s predicting a 15 per cent growth for HTC this year.
