Massively multiplayer game Star Wars: The Old Republic got off to a tremendous start when it was released on PC last month. More than 60 million in-game hours have been racked up so far, and more than 1.5 million characters created. Now though, developer BioWare’s boss says it’s coming to Mac too.
BioWare co-founder Dr Ray Muzka told Joystiq in an interview this week that a Mac OS X version of Star Wars: The Old Republic is “definitely one of the things we’re looking at next. We want to get this launch under our belt and everything stabilized and happy, and then we’ll look at other platforms, and that’s obviously one of the first ones.”
Muzyak went on to point out that BioWare has ported many of its PC games before – it’s even included them on the same disc in the past. But don’t expect a Mac port too soon: the game runs on HeroEngine, a game engine which currently only works on Windows. Mac support is in the pipeline for sometime next year, but there’s no exact date just yet.
While you can run Star Wars: The Old Republic on a newer Mac with a Windows partition right now, it may well come to pass that the game becomes playable on Macs – and iPads – before BioWare releases a port. Game streaming service OnLive has said it is looking to license The Old Republic for its service, and is already in talks with publisher Electronic Arts.
