Put it down to poor shipping figures or the winter sales, but the price of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet has been drastically reduced across the board at UK retailers, right down to £169. Will we see the equivalent of the HP TouchPad firesale all over again?

The BlackBerry PlayBook, which went on sale last summer, met to tepid reviews, and has been steadily dropping in price since then. Now though, it’s had a huge cut: the 16GB model has been dropped from £399 right down to £169 at Carphone Warehouse, with the 32GB and 64GB models seeing similar drops to £199 and £329 respectively.

Other UK retailers, such as Amazon, are also stocking the 16GB model for under £200, and RIM has enacted a similar price drop to $299 (£191) before tax in the US for every capacity model (Yes, really – expect the 64GB models to go first).

The move echoes HP’s £99 TouchPad firesale, which followed its announcement that it was pulling out of webOS hardware last year. All the remaining stock was quickly snapped up, and the device is now enjoying a second lease of life as an Android tablet.

At this price point, the seven-inch BlackBerry PlayBook, which was recently hacked to support the Android Market app store, might well prove popular with bargain hunters too. But RIM could be playing a dangerous game here: by dumping its stock of tablets, it runs the risk of admitting its new software for mobiles which is based on the same QNX operating system as the PlayBook, BlackBerry Ten, is a failure. And with almost a year to go before it arrives, that could put it in a tight position indeed.

Will you be buying a bargain BlackBerry PlayBook? Rather wait for the similarly sized Kindle Fire? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments.

Really enjoying my Playbook, cracking tablet for the price!

I have one, got while @ £250, but mine used grade A for £210 because I traded stuff in, My 11 year old son has one got used for £140. And my 6 year old son has got a HTC Flyer ( Currys £199.97 )for his 7th Brithday and even with games on it not liking it much, only got for him for the screen estate and it can do more games for now.

I like the Playbook, great Design and I like the fact it has speakers on the front instead of the back. I also like the fact the camera’s maybe fixed focus but the front one unlike all android tablets i have used it is not blurry at all. its clear.

I do like the playbooks OS and it does really do multi tasking, The only real downide is no sd card micro or not and no out of the box usb host support, even my Sony Ericsson wt19i has that..

But the sad thing is even with the stock @ £169 its stil not selling. the stores still have stock and its sad Because if they got there fingers out it could I feel beat other tablets as it is the right size. 10″ is way to big and 7″ is right. I have just under 400 apps/games for IOS ( son’s and wife have ipod touch 4th gen ), If Apple made a 7″ ipad I would jump back to ios, but as they don’t its playbook all the way.

    Just my 2p worth

It may have worthy hardware, but if the Kindle Fire’s near-identical design and specs prove anything, it’s that the original c£400 pricetag for anything other than an iPad (or maybe an Eee Pad – Asus has carved out a nice niche for itself amongst Android geeks) is an absolute kiss of death. Why pay that when you could have an iPad?

I have had the ipad 1st gen and its to big,

Yeah the Playbook  launch price tag was stupid, I never got one when they first came out. I think you might find the Kindle fire yes its got the same sort of spec’s as the playbook, but its not got front facing speakers ( a very big help ) and no cameras, and the Playbook does not feel cheap and nasty and i’m basing that on android tablets around the £100 - £200 mark..

But you also have to remember Blackberry was not selling this below cost, like the kindle range is.

I would like to see it do good, but until makers get their heads from up the own bckside, thinking they can beat Apple, instead of just thinking they can be as good as Apple with volume sales etc. then they mght stand a chance.

People like choice and not everyone wants Apple or Android etc
