A few months ago, we revealed that Street Fighter 4 is coming to Android, as an LG exclusive. It’s still not available yet, but its launch date can’t be far off: this mobile version of the epic button basher will have its own section in Capcom’s upcoming Street Fighter Global Championship, taking place next month.

The event, for which qualification takes place in Japan and the US on 14 January, has two categories, one for Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition on the Xbox 360, and another for Street Fighter 4 HD on the Android powered (and US-only) LG Optimus LTE, suggesting it’ll be out by then.

Perhaps more interesting than a tournament at which you can win a new phone (The LG Nitro HD) or $10,000 for first place is the revelation that the Android game will in fact be in HD: the first Android phones with 720p displays, such as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and LG Nitro HD in the US, are starting to trickle out, so we’re expecting the game to look suitably gorgeous.

As for when we’ll see Street Fighter 4 HD on other Android phones, who can say? At least we’ve got Grand Theft Auto 3 to be getting on with in the meantime.
