UPDATE: We’ve had reports that GTA 3 Mobile is working fine on the Samsung Galaxy S2.

Excited about the full fat Grand Theft Auto 3 headed to your mobile phone? It’s been given a launch date of Thursday 15 December, so there’s not long to wait. There’s just one catch: you know how Rockstar said it would run on the Samsung Galaxy S2 Android phone? Yeah, it’s not saying that anymore.

Come next week, you’ll be able to download Grand Theft Auto 3 for £2.99 on almost all recent iOS devices (iPad, iPad 2, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G), as well as a smattering of dual-core Android phones and tablets, including the LG Optimus 2X and Motorola Atrix. One device that won’t be however is the hugely successful and stupendouly powerful dual-core Samsung Galaxy S2.

It’s odd, because Rockstar originally said Grand Theft Auto 3 for mobile would launch on it. However, when asked, a spokesperson said that the company could now only confirm it would run on the models listed below, but would look to support additional models over time.

The reason likely lies in the dual-core processor used: Samsung’s Exynos 1.2GHz system on a chip flattens the competition in benchmarks, but that’s because the competition don’t use it. Instead, Rockstar appears to be supporting the Nvidia Tegra 2 chip used more widely. In other words, if you have the less powerful Samsung Galaxy R, you’ll be able to play Grand Theft Auto 3.

Of course, in doing so, Rockstar may have overlooked the Samsung Galaxy S2’s absurd sales figures (10 million globally by the end of September). We’ll see how things pan out next week.

The full list of supported Android devices (Many are US only models):

  • HTC Rezound
  • LG Optimus 2x
  • Motorola Atrix 4G
  • Motorola Droid X2
  • Motorola Photon 4G
  • Samsung Galaxy R
  • T-Mobile G2x
  • Acer Iconia
  • Asus Eee Pad Transformer
  • Dell Streak 7
  • LG Optimus Pad
  • Motorola Xoom
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1
  • Sony Tablet S
  • Toshiba Thrive

I’m guessing that’s an oversight, as looking at that list, it’s US-only phone list (and the S2 has only just launched there).

I’m betting that list will grow very soon.  (Hoping Arc S is included).

I’m sure it will – to the Galaxy S2 at least. Rockstar’s only ever said that it’ll be on dual-core Android phones though, so perhaps not the Arc S. The more the merrier though, I hope.

Also not Nvidia Tegra 2. To be fair, you can’t really blame Rockstar for that one, it didn’t exist when Rockstar said it was porting the game to mobile!
