Sony Ericsson’s been in the middle of a big deal of late, to allow the former to swallow the latter. No they’re in the latter stages of it all coming together, news has spread that the ‘Ericsson’ monicker will be forever dropped as of mid-2012. It could be a game-changing move for Sony.

An unnamed Sony exec has let slip the following nugget of knowledge: “Mid next year, the Sony Ericsson brand will be phased out even as it looks to become a complete smartphone company. It would then sell its smartphones under the Sony brand.”

Bringing Ericsson’s mobile nous fully into Sony’s ownership could be a deal that reinvents the company’s mobile branch. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Android handsets, which have been growing in popularity over the last year or so, are certainly tasty, but I’d wager that Sony’s in-house industrial design team will take those foundations and really knock it out of the park.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play review

With access to the kind of people who design VAIO laptops and BRAVIA TVs involved, Sony could come out with mobile phones that really rival the iPhone in terms of style. And that’s before we talk about the brands that Sony has under its belt.

Yeah sure; the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play had playstation branding, but it’s a limited affair bound by red tape. A Sony Xperia handset both with full Playstation credentials and a carefully integrated music player baring the Walkman branding has the potential to do for Sony what the original iPhone did to the mobile market in 2007.

In short: Ericsson’s brought a lot to the table over the years, but under Sony control you can probably expect something to be properly exited about.

My friend says the OS isn’t good. He owns one but what he didn’t like about it is that it has limited apps unlike the iPhone and Android phones.

In the past they used their own OS and Symbian, but their Xperia range is now mostly Android.

Hey if they are on par with the new tablets they just released, they will definitely be making a splash. those new tablets are smooth and nice, although oddly designed.
